Trainer Brad Cox’s Monomoy Girl took another step towards cementing herself as the 3-year-old fillies division leader after a dominant wire-to-wire performance in Sunday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga.
Breaking sharply from post 4 under Florent Geroux as the 1-2 favorite, Monomoy Girl was able to get up past her foes and take the inside position heading into the first turn, while Gio Game ran to her outside. The pair led the way through tepid times of :24.12, :48.23, and 1:12.43 before Monomoy Girl began opening up her advantage heading into the far turn. Midnight Bisou mounted a rally three-wide through the far turn in an effort to catch the leader, but straightening for home, Monomoy Girl kicked it into high gear and drew off without much urging to win by a growing 3 lengths in a final time of 1:50.46 for the 1 1/8-mile main track event.
