Monomoy Girl was honored as the 2018 champion three-year-old filly on Thursday evening during the Eclipse Award ceremony at Gulfstream Park.

The chestnut daughter of Tapizar recorded a near-perfect season, posting a 6-1-0-0 mark from seven starts. She actually crossed the wire first in all seven starts, but suffered disqualification in the Cotillion Stakes (G1) after finishing a neck in front of rival Midnight Bisou.

Monomoy Girl dominated early this year, taking the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds and Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland prior to a half-length triumph in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs in May. She continued her winning ways after shipping to New York for trainer Brad Cox, adding victories in the Acorn Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park and Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga to her resume.

Then came her win/disqualification in the Cotillion, a race geared toward readying the sophomore miss for a first bout against her elders in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1). Monomoy Girl proved best of all in that contest, scoring by a length and wrapping up division honors in the process.

Monomoy Girls recently took the number one spot on the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Top Thoroughbred Poll. She had 11 first-place votes and earned 339 points to take over the top spot from the multiple Grade 1 winner City of Light.
