In 2018 Brad, for the 5th year in a row, set career highs with 243 wins and earnings of $15,182,346. The barn also hit career highs in stakes wins (32), and maintained a 26% win rate for the year, while facing competition at many of the top tracks around the country. Overall Brad was 5th among North American trainers in earnings and 4th in wins.
The Cox barn had a record 20 graded stakes wins in 2018. The stable was headlined by Breeder’s Cup Distaff winner, 2018 Eclipse Horse of the Year Finalist, and and presumptive 2018 Eclipse Three-Year-Old Filly winner Monomoy Girl. Monomoy Girl was never second to the wire in during her 7 starts of 2018, with 5 Grade 1 wins culminating in with a victory in the Breeder’s Cup Distaff. Other Grade 1 winners included Leofric (Clark Handicap) and Long on Value (Highlander Stakes). The Cox Barn also featured a host of other graded stakes winners including Mr. Misunderstood, Arklow, Golden Mischief, Sassy Sienna, Tiger Moth, Will Call, Beyond Blame, and Plainsman.
Brad grew up a few blocks from Churchill Downs and earned an advanced degree in racing education under the famed Twin Spires. He broke into the game working for trainers Burt Kessinger and Jimmy Baker before landing a job as assistant to trainer Dallas Stewart. His five-year stint there indoctrinated him to the revolutionary training program pioneered by D. Wayne Lukas and has been passed down through former assistants like Todd Pletcher, Kiaran McLaughlin and Stewart.
Brad set out on his own in 2005 at the age of 25. His barn enjoyed a breakout year in 2014, accumulating 75 wins in 295 starts (25%) and earning $2,394,571 for the year, including his first graded stakes win with Carve in the Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (GIII). 2015 was an even better year that included 5 graded stakes wins from 4 different horses. In total, the barn won 98 of 367 (27%) starts.
